On Saturday, August 17, 2013, the 4th Annual Rain Forest Runs, a Half Marathon, 10K run and 5K run/walk, will be held in Volcano Village on Hawaii, the Big Island. This event takes place at 4,000 feet elevation and traverses the majestic native rain forest in quaint Volcano Village and the ranches near Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park on the slopes of Kilauea Volcano, one of the world's most active volcanoes. Start/Finish is at Cooper Center on Wright Road in Volcano Village.
Start Times: Half Marathon - 7:00am 10K Run - 7:30am 5K Run/Walk - 7:45am

 

Course Descriptions

The 5K and 10K participants weave through the lush native rain forest on the mostly flat, tranquil streets of Volcano Village, while the Half Marathon continues into the more hilly surrounding upper ranch lands with views of two stunning volcanoes, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, in the distance (elevation change is 650 feet). This event is run just minutes from Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park.

 

Entry Fees

Now through May 31, 2013:     ½ Marathon ‑ $65      10K ‑ $40      5K - $25    

After June 1, 2013:       ½ Marathon ‑ $75      10K ‑ $45      5K - $30   

After Aug. 1, 2013:     ½ Marathon ‑ $85      10K ‑ $50      5K - $35    

Fees are non refundable for any reason, including cancelation due to natural disasters.This event is just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes Nat’l Park

Early Check-in, Late Registration & Salad/Pasta Buffet Dinner

Friday, August 16, 2013 Check-in or register from 10am to 6pm
At Volcano Art Center's Niaulani Campus, located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village. Indulge in a "carbo-load" pasta and salad bar dinner. This all-you-can-eat-buffet of the island's fresh salad greens, dressings and a pasta and dessert bar is open to all runners, family, friends and the public. Cost is $15.00 for ages 12 & up; $8.50 for ages 6-11 and free for ages 5 & under. Pick up pre-purchased Salad/Pasta Dinner tickets at Packet Pick-up at Niaulani Campus between 10am and 5pm. There is NO race day registration for the Half Marathon. 5K & 10K registration closes at 7AM on race day.

Race Day Check-In

Saturday, August 17, 2013 5:30am - 7:00am, Cooper Center
Please arrive at least one hour prior to start time of your event to check in and pick up your race number. If you are not already registered, you are welcome to sign up for the 10K and 5K on race day. There is NO race day registration for the Half Marathon. Parking is available within the village, and carpooling is encouraged. The parking areas in Volcano Village within walking distance of the Start/Finish line.
Participant Preparation
  • Be prepared for dramatic variation in weather and temperature, from cold and rainy to hot, humid and sunny. Remember, you will be at 4,000' elevation.
  • Bring a filled water bottle.
  • Runners must have their race numbers visible at all times.

Aid Stations

Aid stations and Port-a-Potties are located every 1 to 1.25 miles along the courses. Volunteers will provide water, ice and Ultima electrolyte replacement drink, along with medical supplies.

 

Race Finish & Awards

You must cross the Finish Line with your race number pinned to the front of your shirt to receive an official time. Volcano Art Center presents art awards donated by local artists to the top three male and female winners of the Half Marathon, to the overall winners for the 10K and 5K and to the top two male and female winners in each ten-year age division for all race events. In addition, medals will be presented to Half Marathon finishers and to the top male and female winners of the Military Division for each race.

 

T-Shirts

T-shirts are given to all registered runners. Souvenir race merchandise will be available for purchase at packet-pick up and on race day. Late Entrants will not be guaranteed a shirt.

 

Race Rules

  • Participants must sign a release form waiving all claims for injury or damages that occur during the race. If this waiver is not signed, the runner will not be allowed to participate in the event.
  • The event is not responsible for any items left at the aid stations, along the course, or at the lost and found table.
  • Medical personnel have the final authority to remove participants from the race if they are judged to be physically incapable of continuing the race without risk of serious injury.
  • If a runner changes races without notifying the race registrar, she/he will be disqualified.
  • If a participant decides to withdraw from the race at any time, it is essential that the participant notifies the race director and turns in her/his race number immediately.
  • All participants must be officially registered and wear a race number.
  • Runners are responsible for knowing the race course.

Anyone who requires and auxiliary aid or service for effective communication or a modification of policies and procedures to participate in this event should contact Sharron Faff at 808-967-8240 as soon as possible, but no later than August 9, 2013.
