Hula Kahiko in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park

It is our honor to coordinate hula kahiko performances at the pa hula at Ka'auea in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Since 1980, hula halau from around the state, and even country, have made presentations at the stone platform, which is set aside for the perpetuation of traditional hula and chant.

For cultural practitioners, gathering at this site and offering hula and chants while facing Halema'uma'u crater, the sacred home of the volcano goddess Pele, is especially meaningful. For spectators, experiencing the sounds and rhythms of ancient-style hula in the natural setting of Kilauea is authentic and quite extraordinary. By interpreting what is being chanted in the Hawaiian language, performers broaden the understanding of Hawaiian history and appreciation for Hawai'i's traditions for all present. These free outdoor performances are once-in-a-lifetime experiences for visitors, and memorable for those already familiar with this spirited art form.

Our award-winning Na Mea Hawaii program, sponsored in part by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, offers hula kahiko (traditional hula) at the pa hula (hula platform) in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, overlooking Kilauea Volcano, mythical home to Pele, the Goddess of Fire. After these inspired and inspiring traditional performances of dancing and chanting, cultural demonstrations of lei making, gourd making, lauhala weaving, making hula implements and others are offered at Volcano Art Center Gallery on the porch.

In 2011, Volcano Art Center began offering Art and Traditions of Hula in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park through a County of Hawai`i and Hawai`i Tourism Authority grant. This program offers more informal hula programs at the pa hula, informances, that provide historical, cultural and present-day perspectives on the chants, songs and dances, and the hula implements used. Again, these hula informances are usually followed by cultural demonstrations at the gallery on the porch.

In 2012, Volcano Art Center added an additional cultural educational element  by adding a weekly program called "Aloha Fridays." This hands-on learning opportunity is partially funded by the County of Hawaii's Department of Research and Deveolpment and the Hawaii Tourism Authority. This program offers a unique and intimate hands-on lesson with a cultural practitioner of Hawaii Island. These lesson topics are variable and some of the subjects covered are hula (dance), chant (oli), ukulele strumming, and lei making.
