A long-standing collaboration between glass artists Hugh Jenkins and Stephanie Ross with silk painter Clytie Mead is featured in the "Reflections of Hawai'i" exhibit. The three artists "have worked closely together to assure an overall harmony that holds a mirror to our close artistic friendship," says Mead.

"Reflections of Hawai'i" presents both traditional and non-traditional glass forms along with silk paintings of native Hawaiian plants. The artists use similar color palettes to represent the diverse natural environments of our island, visually representing the state of aniani, the condition of water so still that everything beneath the surface is clear as the surface reflects the surrounding environment.

Since 2001, Jenkins and Ross have lived in Honoka'a on Hawai'i Island. The husband and wife team construct glass pieces as a reflection of the island's landscape, depicting their impressions of the volcano, forest, ocean, and widely varying climate and environment. For this exhibit their "Pohaku" series moves away from literal pictorial interpretation to more abstract reference to the color, heat, and force.

Mead, who received a BFA in painting from Carnegie Mellon University, and a MA from Cornell University, moved to Hawai'i Island in 1991. She now lives and works in the rural community of Ahualoa. Having studied the Chinese art of watercolor painting on silk from master artist Jane Chao, Mead's blend of Asian technique and western artistic vocabulary creates her personal style of painting on silk.
