Special Events EVENTS AT NIAULANI
Volcano Art Center offers a variety of interesting and unique events at our Niaulani Campus throughout the year. We host "'Ohana Sundays at Niaulani," a series of free lectures held from January to June on the art and culture of Hawai'i, and "Art Nights at Niaulani," a series of free presentations to promote community cultural exchange. In addition, we offer the the Monday morning "Niaulani Nature Walk - Free Forest Tour in Volcano" and the annual "Love the Arts" fundraiser. These special events take place at VAC's Niaulani Campus located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village.

| "Curb Appeal 2010" Join VAC for a day of planting, landscaping and learning about native plants. Hale Ho’omana, (VAC's new education building) is ready to be adorned with native flora and foliage and all are invited to be part of the excitement! Forest experts will be on hand to discuss the care and
propagation of native species and answer questions. Members and non-members are invited to donate plants and contribute to the legacy at Niaulani. For a list of specific plants or any other questions call (808) 967-8222. |

| "Volcano Poetry Slam" emceed by spoken word artist Kimberly Dark. This high-energy, audience-judged poetry competition is open to the public, both as audience members and participating poets. First time and returning poets with new material are welcome. Up to 15 poets can compete, with poets chosen by lottery that evening at 7 p.m. sharp. Prizes are awarded to the top 3 finalists. Five judges are chosen from volunteer audience members. Rules for poets: 1) bring 2 poems of your own construction (though not everyone gets to round two), 2) make sure each poem is no longer than 3 minutes performed (if you go over, points are deducted from your score), and 3) poems can be read or memorized, but no props please. | "Art Talk at Niaulani" features a slide lecture presentation with nationally recognized sculptor Albert Paley. Paley is a modernist American metal sculptor born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1944.
He is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects, the AIA’s highest award, as a non-architect. This event is made possible with support from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Laila Twigg-Smith Art Fund - Hawaii Community Foundation, and the Art

| "Volcano Natural Farming Group." This group of like-minded individuals meets on the third Sunday of every month to educate interested community members about growing food without the use of outside sources of fertilizer, pesticides, and feed. The focus of each meeting
varies from month to month, covering topics such as concepts, philosophy, and applications. The goal of these meetings is to promote independence, sustainability, and health. Rain gear, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and advanced registration recommended. VAC's Niaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Rd. in Volcano Village. $5-$10 suggested donation per session. | "Niaulani Forest Work Day." Enjoy the open air while volunteering to help preserve the beauty and diversity of the native, old growth rainforest at Volcano Art Center's Niaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Rd. in Volcano Village. Held on the third Sunday of each month, these work days are a unique opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to connect with nature and with each other while assisting in a variety of needed tasks, plus learn about the rich mixture of flora and fauna on the 7.4 acre property. | "Niaulani Nature Walk" - Free Forest Tour in Volcano. This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail. The walk introduces individuals, families, and groups to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus not only on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, but also the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians. Offered every Monday at 9:30 a.m., the weekly walk starts just one mile from the entrance to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
