| "Guided Meditation" with Robert Frutos. Meditation is a holistic discipline during which time the practitioner trains his or her mind in order to realize some benefit. People practice meditation for many reasons within the context of their culture. This 7 week class meets once a week to set sincere intention in the beautiful rain forest surrounding VAC’s Niaulani Campus. Benefits include concentration and relaxation. | "Volcano Poetry Slam" emceed by spoken word artist Kimberly Dark. This high-energy, audience-judged poetry competition is open to the public, both as audience members and participating poets. First time and returning poets with new material are welcome. Up to 15 poets can compete, with poets chosen by lottery that evening at 7 p.m. sharp. Prizes are awarded to the top 3 finalists. Five judges are chosen from volunteer audience members. Rules for poets: 1) bring 2 poems of your own construction (though not everyone gets to round two), 2) make sure each poem is no longer than 3 minutes performed (if you go over, points are deducted from your score), and 3) poems can be read or memorized, but no props please. | "Art Talk at Niaulani" features a slide lecture presentation with nationally recognized sculptor Albert Paley. Paley is a modernist American metal sculptor born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1944.
He is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects, the AIA’s highest award, as a non-architect. managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Come to the Volcano Art Center's Gallery porch between 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon where paper, pencils, color markers and paints will be available to create art in the park on Fee Free Day. From the trailhead at the end of Mauna Loa Road, attendees are guided through an open koa/mamane forest, along a moderately-difficult trail, where avian disease-carrying mosquito populations decline and native bird presence increase. | The Spring Wind Quintet, recognized as one of the country’s leading woodwind quintets, has been a major force in the development of chamber music in Hawaii. All members of the SWQ are members of the Honolulu Symphony. Many new works have been composed and arranged especially for the Spring Wind Quintet. The group has an extensive and varied repertoire earning several national grants and offers educational programs for all ages. The SWQ will be performing the following program:
