Kilauea (4,096') is the most active volcano in the world, home to the fiery goddess Pele, and one of five volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The others are Kohala in the north (5,480'); Hualalai in the west (8,271'); Mauna Kea in the north-east (13,796'), known for its snowy peaks in winter, sacredness to Hawaiians, and world-class telescopes; and Mauna Loa in the center (13,677'), the gently sloping giant, which at 56,000 feet from the ocean's floor forms the largest volcano and mountain mass in the world. The Volcano Art Center Gallery is located at the summit of Kilauea, which is part of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, the state's number one natural visitor attraction. VAC offers programs in the Park at various locations, including the Gallery, pa hula, Kilauea Military Camp, and Kilauea Military Camp Theater.
