ABOUT THE PERFORMERS Volcano Art Center presents Halau Hula Ka Makani Hali 'Ala o Puna of Hawai'i Island. "This performance is special for my halau and me, for we are joined by sister halau hula members from Japan," says kumu hula Ehulani Stephany. "In celebration of Kamehameha Day, we present hula in honor of our Hawaiian nobility. We'll also share chants and stories in honor of our volcano fire goddess Pelehonuamea. Our presentation is dedicated to two of my kumu hula that have passed on: master kumu hula George Lanakilakeikiahiali'i Na'ope and Ray Kahikilaulani Fonseca." CRAFT DEMONSTRATIONS On the same day, there are cultural demonstrations at the Volcano Art Center Gallery front porch from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lei making is offered by Loke Kamanu and kapa making and bamboo stamp printing is led by Pam and John Lipscomb. The opening of the "Hawai'i Nei 2010" art exhibit takes place with a youth division artist reception from 3 to 4 p.m., an awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m., and an adult division artist reception from 5 to 7 p.m. This multi-media show, on view through July 26, features winners of the juried art contest celebrating native flora and fauna. ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE SERIES Since the early 1980s, Volcano Art Center has invited halau (hula schools) from around the state to make presentations on the stone hula platform, which is set aside for the perpetuation of traditional hula and chant. These performances are done in a natural setting without electronic amplification so spectators can experience the rhythm and sound of hula naturally. The accompanying narration helps malihini (newcomers) as well as kama'aina (residents) in understanding the story behind each hula. Each performance is a priceless once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a halau's expression of hard work, dedication, spirit, and commitment to tradition. The audience is advised to bring a ground mat, sunscreen, and rain gear as the outdoor performance takes place rain or shine. Since parking is limited, carpooling is recommended. VAC sponsors these free cultural events 4 to 6 times per year in cooperation with Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and supported in part by the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawai'i and by the National Endowment for the Arts. Tax deductible donations to our non-profit arts and educational organization are welcome at our Gallery entrance. FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: (808) 967-8222 or E-mail Us
