Volcano Art Center proudly presents
hula kahiko performances at the
pa hula at
Ka'auea in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Since 1980,
hula halau from around the state have made presentations at the stone platform, which is set aside for the perpetuation of traditional
hula and chant. For cultural practitioners, gathering at this site and offering
hula and chants while facing Halema'uma'u crater, the sacred home of the volcano goddess Pele, is especially meaningful. For spectators, experiencing the sounds and rhythms of ancient-style
hula in the natural setting of Kilauea is authentic and quite extraordinary. By interpreting what is being chanted in the Hawaiian language, performers broaden the understanding of Hawaiian history and appreciation for Hawai'i's traditions for all present. These free outdoor performances are once-in-a-lifetime experiences for visitors, and memorable for those already familiar with this spirited art form.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS ON OUR HULA SERIES:
"This is my favorite event on the island - I come to every one."
"It is very hard to find something so traditional, original, and just lovely in Hawai'i. Tourists usually only get to see commercial dances. It's a billion times better than the Island Breeze Lu'au at King Kamehameha's Hotel."
"I was moved in a most profound spiritual way. The performance brought me to tears of joy and the aloha spirit coursed through my body. I feel as if I have come home from a long journey."
"We wanted to see real native hula and not that touristy stuff. We will never forget this great event."
"... always the highlight of our trips to the Islands."
