    Event Description

August 21, 2010 marks the inaugural Rain Forest Runs, which consists of a Half Marathon, a 10K Run, and a 5K Run/Walk. This new event is at 4,000 feet elevation and traverses the majestic native rain forest in quaint Volcano Village and the ranches near Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. All distances will be open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, participating for health, enjoyment, and to raise funds for the non-profit Volcano Art Center.
    Event Location & Times
 
The Volcano Art Center Kilauea Rain Forest Runs are held in Volcano Village at 4,000 feet elevation. The Start/Finish is at at Cooper Center on Wright Road. Start Times: Half Marathon - 7:00 a.m. / 10K Run - 7:30 a.m. / 5K Run/Walk - 7:45 a.m.
    Course Descriptions

The 5K and 10K participants weave through the lush native rain forest on the mostly flat, tranquil streets of Volcano Village, while the Half Marathon will continue into the more hilly surrounding upper ranch lands with views of two stunning volcanoes, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, in the distance (elevation change is 650 feet). Please note: This event is run just minutes from Hawai 'i Volcanoes National Park, home to Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes.
    Early Check-In, Late Registration & Carbo-Load Dinner
Friday, August 20, 2010, Check-In or Register from 2 to 6 p.m., Dinner from 5 to 8 p.m.


You can check-in or register for the race the night before at the 'Ohi'a Room of the Kilauea Military Camp in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, plus indulge in a "carbo-load" dinner at the KMC Cafeteria. This all-you-can-eat buffet of the island's favorite foods is open to all runners, family, friends, and the public. Cost is $19.75 for ages 12 & up, $9.75 for ages 6-11, and free for ages 5 & under. Pick up pre-purchased carbo-load tickets at the 'Ohi'a Room between 2 to 6 p.m. Park entrance fees may apply. Please note: There is NO race day registration for the Half Marathon - registration closes at 6 p.m. the night before (5K &10K registration closes 7:00 a.m. race morning).
    Race Day Check-In
Saturday, August 21, 2010, 5:50 to 7 a.m., Cooper Center

 
Please arrive at least one hour before the start time of your event to check-in and pick up your race number. If you are not already registered, you are welcome to sign up for the 10K and the 5K on race day until race start. However, there is NO race day registration for the Half Marathon. Since parking is limited at Cooper Center, carpooling is encouraged. There are many parking areas in Volcano Village within easy walking distance of the start/finish line (please allow ample time to find a parking space).
    Participant Preparation
  • Be prepared for dramatic variations in weather and temperature, from cold and rainy to hot, humid, and sunny. Remember, you'll be at 4,000 feet elevation.
  • Bring a filled water bottle and energy gels/bars.
  • For safety reasons, no walkmans, ipods, or other devices may be worn along the course, and runners must have their race numbers visible at all times.
    Aid Stations
 
Aid stations are located every 1 to 1.25 miles along the 3 courses. Volunteers will provide water, cola, ice, and Ultima electrolyte replacement drinks, along with medical supplies.
    Finish & Awards
 
You must cross the finish line with race number pinned to the front of your shirt to receive an official time card. The Volcano Art Center will present unique art awards to the top 3 male and female winners of the Half Marathon, to the overall winners for the 10K and the 5K, and to the top 2 male and female winners in each 10 year age division for all 3 events. In addition, medals will be presented to all Half Marathon finishers, and the Kilauea Military Camp will present awards to the top male and female winners of the Military Division for each race.
    T-Shirts

T-shirts are given to finishers only (no-shows / no runs = no shirts). Souvenir race merchandise will also be available for purchase on race day. Late entrants will not be guaranteed a finisher's shirt, and will receive whatever shirts are left over, if any, after the race.

Race Rules

  • Participants must sign a release form waiving all claims for injury or damages that occur during the race. If this waiver is not signed, the runner will not be allowed to participate in the event.
  • The sponsors for the event are not responsible for any items left at the aid stations, along the course, or at the lost and found table.
  • Runners must follow the directions of all race officials, course marshals, and security personnel.
  • Course marshals have the authority to disqualify any participant.
  • Medical personnel have the final authority to remove participants from the race if they are judged to be physically incapable of continuing the race without risk of serious injury.
  • No contestant may use alcohol or any illegal, detrimental, or dangerous drugs, stimulants, depressants, or other such substances with the intent to improve performance.
  • Inapporopriate behavior or abusive treatment of volunteers or other acts of poor sportsmanship are grounds for immediate disqualification.
  • If a runner changes races without notifying the race registrar, she/he will be disqualified and will not receive a finisher T-shirt.
  • If a participant decides to withdraw from the race at any time, it is essential that the participant notifies the race director and turns in her/his race number immediately.
  • No bandits allowed - all participants must be officially registered and wearing a race number. Bandits will be banned from all Road Runner's Club of America events for one year.
  • THIS IS AN ALCOHOL AND DRUG-FREE EVENT.
    No alcoholic beverages are allowed to be consumed along the course or by the finish line.
