Katherine Molina
Katherine Molina's work is divided between two studios, one in Ben Lomond, California and one in Kona, Hawaii. The studio in Kona is on the top of a mountain, surrounded by beautiful little coffee trees and overlooking the Kona coast. In the afternoons there are warm gentle breezes and soft rains that come through the screened openings of the studio. In California the studio is in the middle of an old redwood forest. "As I work on my prints I can hear the rushing of the river as it runs by our cabin to the ocean. If I work in the early evening I see the deer wandering through the forest. Because of the trees it is a bit cooler than Kona and the light is filtered, but the shadows are wonderful." Although there are common threads that run through all of her work, the atmosphere of each studio influences the art differently. Prints done in Kona reflect the culture of the island and the diversity of its people, and those printed in California speak of nature and the flow of the land.
"I am constantly looking for that one face in the crowd that tells a story or that special moment in the day when the light is perfect. I use many thin layers to achieve tone, depth, and strength. While this takes a bit longer to create, the effects are well worth it" says Katherine.
