Andrea Pro

Andrea can still remember the excitement of carving her first block of linoleum in her third grade art class. She took a thirty-something year break, arriving home again in a woodcut printing workshop fourteen years ago. She’s been printing ever since.

Images arise from Andrea’s deep awareness of her inner experience balanced with her attention to the external world. She follows the thread of an idea in a search to understand what it is that intrigues her. She may have a sense that an image is not really about ‘Ohi’a but more about some quality of the relationship between the tree and its environment. This begins a journey of dreams, unexpected insights and dawning clarity as the idea unfolds. After this magical process of exploration, Andrea then enters into the very structured and earthy process that is woodcut printmaking. Unlocking the mysteries embedded in the grain of wood, making marks with chisels and grappling with the puzzle of the image reversing when transferred from wood to paper is deeply satisfying to her intellect, soul and hands.

Her work has been shown in numerous juried and invitational exhibits and can be seen in Hawai’i galleries. Volcano Art Center hosted her solo exhibition, "In the Magical ‘Ohi’a Forest" in 2007.
