Fauna lives on the Big Island of Hawai’i where the abundant natural diversity inspires her current series of paintings of tropical flora. This work has its intentions set in both tradition as well as progression. While conducting in-depth experiments of plant dyes, she discovered a method of using colorful extracts of different leaves, barks, and roots as a medium for watercolor painting. By first treating the paper in the way one would a cloth for dyeing, she was ecstatic to discover the efficacy and brilliance of the dyes reaction to paper. "By combining compositions of loosely accurate plant illustrations in conjunction with modern design approaches, and painted almost completely with plant dyes but with traces of digital media, it is my goal to honor and refresh the nearly lost art and medium of natural dyes and the plants from which they come." Using natural materials along with digital media defines her approach as the synthesis of opposites. Her enthusiasm for ethnic textiles and global design coupled with her passion for the botanical world influences her artistic expressions. "I combine eclectic embellishments and rich colors derived from nature’s palette with elaborate patterns and imagery, both symbolic and nonsensical, resulting in multiple layers of materials and meaning. I am acutely influenced by global textile artisans and traditions, whose techniques are elaborate and timeless. I respond to the magnificence of their mastery through my materials and modern aesthetic." |
