Christine grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. She started drawing as a child, and her parents supported her interests by encouraging her participation in summer art classes at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Her family brought her to explore the Volcano area in 1962 and since she now lives in Hilo, she continues to explore Kilauea as a hiker, camper and artist. "I’m constantly intrigued with the frequent changes and eruptions in the area and love to camp in the 'back country'. I’m very interested in the conservation of our native plant and animal species, and volunteer with several organizations around the island. Hiking and camping are still strong interests, and I love to combine my art with my outdoor interests, as often volunteer projects and hiking lead me to places that are more difficult to access, and I’m able to sketch or photograph the rare plants, birds, and their environment." Christine majored in art at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, working mainly in fiber art. It was there that she was first introduced to pastels. She works with "soft pastels" and loves to work "en plein air", sometimes returning 2 or 3 times to capture just the right light. "Painting plein air makes a strong connection with the environment, and is a wonderful multisensory experience. By actually seeing the birds in the area, studying the plants and trees present, and then working to represent them in my paintings, I aim to engage the viewer to take a closer look, not only into the art itself, but to stimulate interest into looking deeper into the natural environment." She has participated in numerous juried and invitational shows and received a Juror's Merit Award from the Pastel Artists of Hawaii and an Honorable Mention from the Animal Companion Show at the Wailoa Center in Hilo. |
