Canda Bloir
When Canda Bloir isn’t giving inspirational and educational tours of Kïlauea Volcano, she can be found in her treehouse studio with mountain views, weaving wild and unique baskets of native materials, and handmade and “found” objects.
Canda first studied with noted Hawai‘i fiber artist Pam Barton and considers Pam both her mentor and dear friend. Canda’s baskets have been included in juried and invitational shows at Wailoa Center and East Hawai‘i Cultural Center. They are on display throughout the Big Island, primarily at the Volcano Art Center Gallery.
A true keiki-o-ka-‘aina (child of the land), Canda has immersed herself in the Hawaiian culture throughout her life and is deeply grateful for this knowledge which has led her to an ever-increasing awareness of mankind’s relationship with nature and the gods of this wahi pana (very special, sacred place).
artist’s statement:
“I feel truly blessed to live and have my home in Hawai‘i. My inspiration comes from my gathering walks in the forest and even in the process of preparing the materials. The hours don’t matter; they are happily spent, an ever-evolving experience. I do not begin with a preconception of form; rather, the rhythm of the weaving decides the shape and size of each basket.”
