Loretta Pasco has been doing needlework since she was six years old. She has since mastered embroidery, crewel work, crochet, needlepoint, macramé and sewing. Her years as a specialty picture framer have also contributed to her design perspective. When Loretta took her first Hawaiian quilting class at Volcano Art Center, she immediately loved both the process and the product—and has been designing Hawaiian quilt patterns ever since. Hawaiian quilting is a gift from the women of the islands that is greatly appreciated by people like Loretta who are continuing the art. Because it is a living art form, there are constantly changes and modifications, combining new ideas and fabrics from around the world with the legacy of the traditional quilt. “In designing quilts, the relationship of the colors and textures is as important as the design itself. They work together, magically melding into something new. I have more ideas for new designs than I will ever have time to make in a lifetime.” Using fabric as her pallet and an unconventional combination of shapes and textures, art quilts and fabric art have been added to her repertoire. |
