Bryan Lowry
Born and raised in Michigan, Bryan visited Hawaii several times starting in 1984 before moving here in 1991. It was a transitional volcanic period, and activity was quiet. Bryan used this time to explore as much of the area as he could, to learn how this "geological wonder" works. Self taught, his interest in photography began at age 10, when his equipment was a Kodak 110. Progressing to a Nikon EM, and in his trusty '79 Mustang, his thirst for the education that travelling provided took him to visit all of the other states. That first camera would last 22 years before giving in to the acidic fumes of the volcano, which has been the focus of Bryan's work. Extreme hikes over hostile terrain of sharp and hot lava are needed to reach the areas of interest to him. A sturdy tripod always goes with him, as most of his images are long exposures in little or no light.
"First and foremost I shoot for myself. It's the peacefulness and tranquility while out at the lava flows that I enjoy. I tend to see the world differently than anyone else and hopefully it shows in my images. In my prints you see what I saw and nothing more. Most of my lava adventures are as extreme as extreme gets. I take a calculated risk based on my knowledge of the volcano. My motto is 'Live to shoot another day'."
Bryan's images are professionally printed on Kodak Metallic paper. It is archival for over 100 years when displayed out of direct sunlight. He also prints on aluminum, a technique which has been public since 2003. "Metal is like high definition photography." No framing is needed, and if kept out of direct sunlight, should last a lifetime. Clean with any glass cleaner and a micro-fiber cloth.
