Photo History Archives of Niaulani
The campus at Niaulani, which began as just a dream many years ago, is now a reality. In 1994, VAC's board of directors conceived the idea of a campus site. In 1996, VAC negotiated a 65 year lease from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, a state agency, for 7.4 acres in the heart of Volcano Village. The property was formally used by the Department of Forestry, who partially funded the removal of non-native trees from the site. These felled trees, along with other downed trees, were partially milled and are being used in the construction of the facilities. After the lease was signed, a series of community meetings were held to garner community input, and initial plans were drawn up.
